Astronomers have proposed several different ways for ring-shaped galaxies to form.

Sometimes, a ring galaxy is formed when another galaxy passes through the first, leaving a "splash" of star formation.

There is no sign of the second galaxy near Hoag's. In this case, astronomers believe that the ring of blue stars is the shredded remains of a galaxy that passed too close, several billion years ago.
