Solar and Lunar Eclipses

The movie shows the Sun, Earth, Moon system looking down from above the north pole of Earth.
Note: the Sun and the Earth-Sun and Earth-Moon distances are not to scale.

Earth's Shadow

The Earth-Moon distance is shown to scale above. The Moon's orbit is at a slight angle to the Earth-Sun orbital plane. Although the Moon orbits the Earth once a month, it rarely passes through the Earth's shadow (lunar eclipse) and its shadow rarely falls on the Earth (solar eclipse).
