The moon's orbit is inclined

The plane of the moon's orbit is inclined to the plane of the Earth's orbit of the Sun.

Eclipses therefore happen infrequently - only when the Sun, the Moon and the Earth are in line. Such alignments only occur in Southern Hemisphere Winter and Summer months.
