In the lower left edge of this black-and-white photo is the horizontal edge of one of the rover's solar panels, displaying portions of eight solar cells. Above that is a flat, sandy surface. In the distance, in the top third of the photo, are traces of wheel tracks making an oval pattern. On the right upper edge of the photo is a crater wall, descending to the right.

Patterns for the Ages
Bright layered rock on the crater wall has marked the martian surface for millions of years, while rover tracks make fresh impressions on the blank canvas of the windswept plain.
