Mars Odyssey Orbit Insertion Burn As it arrived at Mars, the spacecraft was travelling in an orbit that would have taken it past the red planet and right round the Sun. However, a precision 21 minute burn of the spacecraft's main rocket engine slowed it just enough for it to be captured by Mars' gravity.
