Eta Carinae - 9

Eta Carinae is a variable star. In the 1800s, Eta Carinae was nearly as bright as Sirius. It then began to dim as its envelope of dust and gas thickened and it eventually became too faint to be seen with the unaided eye. In the 1940s it began to brighten again and it is now just visible by eye. Eta Carinae has been changing for a considerable time. The outer cloud visible in the Chandra X-Ray photo provides evidence of another large outburst that occurred over a thousand years ago.
