2 - Natural Radiation Detectors

Humans have detectors for two forms of electromagnetic radiation.

eye - light receptors 1. Our eyes are sensitive to visible light.

skin - heat receptors 2. Our skin contains sensors that detect infrared radiation.
We usually call it warmth.

We lack sensors for other forms of radiation, but if their levels are sufficently high, they can affect us:

  • Microwaves heat and cook tissue - burn damage
  • Ultraviolet light damages the skin - sunburn
  • X-rays and gamma rays damage tissue - radiation damage
