GOODS Image Aquisition

There are two Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey fields: GOODS North, centered on HDF North in Ursa Minor and GOODS South, centered on Chandra Deep Field South in Fornax.

GOODS is a multiple wavelength survey. It is a coordinated program of observations by the Hubble Telescope, The Chandra X-Ray Telescope, The Spitzer Infrared Space Telescope, the European Southern Observatory VLT and the Gemini Telecopes.

The animations show the fields imaged by the three space telescopes. The following imaging systems were utilised:

Spitzer Space Telescope

  • MIPS Camera - 24 micron 10 hour exposure
  • IRAC Camera - 3.6 to 8 micron - 10 pointings, each a 25 hour exposure. Deeper exposures in the overlap areas.

Chandra X-Ray Telescope

  • ACIS Camera 1 million sec exposures to be increased to 5 million secs

Hubble Space Telescope

  • WFP2 camera - the initial 11 day HDF exposure - north only
  • ACS camera - 16 pointings, each a 5 day exposure. Revisits field at 45 day intervals to check for emergence of high redshift supernovae.
