Kuiper Belt

The material beyond the gas giants was never involved in planet formation. Some of it was swept there by radiation pressure when the Sun began to shine. Some of it condensed to form Kuiper Belt objects.

From time to time, objects from the Kuiper belt enter the inner solar system and become short period comets.
