A CCD chip contains an array of pixels. The chip itself is quite small - a few centimetres square - no bigger than a postage stamp. The pixels are microscopic in size - a typical array contains 1000 x 1000 or more pixels.

The chip stores images electronically. When a pixel is struck by a photon, the pixel stores an electronic charge. As photons arrive over time, the charge builds.
