The charges stored on a CCD chip are translated into an image via computer. A program reads the charges stored in the CCD pixel array and creates a corresponding array of image pixels. Each pixel in the image is assigned a grey level. CCD chips can deliver 16 bit data - 65,000 grey levels.

Colour images are created by combining separate images. Three separate images are taken through red, green and blue filters and then combined to create a composite colour image.
